Paul worked with the women of the gospel more than any of the other apostles. Priscilla and Phoebe traveled with him, preaching and building up the churches. Paul and Phoebe had been holding revivals together; now she was called to the city of Rome. Paul could not accompany her, but he was very mindful of her reputation and so wrote a letter of recommendation:
"I commend unto you Phoebe, our sister, which is a servant of the church [which signifies a minister of the church] at Cenchrea: that ye receive her in the Lord, as becometh saints, and that ye assist her in whatsoever business she hath need of you: for she has been a succourer of many, and of myself also" (Rom. 16:1).
This shows she had authority to do business in the churches, and that she had been successful in winning souls to Christ. Paul is not ashamed to say she had encouraged him; he speaks of her in the highest praise.
So let it be said of us.
